Nationalism and international relations

Prerequisite – 11 Introduction to international relations

This paper surveys four sets of issues in the study of nationalism:

  1. rival definitions of the nation (ie what is) and why it has come to exercise a central position in modern political thought

  2. the relationship between nationalism and other major ideologies, eg liberalism, communism and fascism

  3. the impact of nationalist theory and practice on international politics since 1945

  4. the resurgence of ethnic and nationalist conflict since the end of the Cold War and the implications for international order, and the role of the UN.
